Grant Description
Opportunity for USA, Canada, and International startup businesses to participate in a business accelerator program. This opportunity is intended for companies founded by Black entrepreneurs. Companies from all stages of development are welcome to apply. Accepted startups receive 12 weeks of mentorship as well as additional perks from a wide range of vendors.

The Northwestern Mutual Black Founder Accelerator, powered by gener8tor, invests in high-growth startups founded by Black entrepreneurs that are building products for consumers’ changing financial preferences, reimagining the client experience, advancing the digital health revolution, or creating transformational analytics and technologies.

The investment priorities for Northwestern Mutual Black Founder Accelerator® Powered by gener8tor are aligned with Northwestern Mutual Future Venture’s key strategic areas of focus:

  • Fintech
  • Insurtech
  • Digital Health
  • Data Analytics

Additional Eligibility Criteria
A company with respect to which: (i) one or more individuals with the title of “Founder”, “Co-Founder” or “CEO” identifies as Black or African American; (ii) at least twenty percent (20%) of the equity ownership interests are held by one more or more individuals who identify as Black or African American; and (iii) such individuals have a significant role in the decision-making process.

Companies must also fit within the investment priorities of Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures:
- Fintech
- Insurtech
- Digital Health
- Data Analytics

Applications are accepted from startups across the globe. However, at least one founder from each startup is required to be located in Milwaukee for the duration of the program. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some programs will be held virtually.

Number of Grants
Up to ten companies per year (two cohorts of five)

Estimated Size of Grant
Companies will receive:
- Investment: $100,000 cash investment in your current round (if raising) or an uncapped convertible bridge note (if not currently raising).
- Co-working Space: Co-working space provided by Northwestern Mutual created to advance innovation, ideation and experimentation for local startups.
- $1M+ in Deals & Perks: Amazing deals and perks from vendors like IBM Cloud, Rackspace, Amazon, PayPal, Zendesk and Microsoft.
- Cohort Programming: Weekly cohort programming featuring topics including understanding market size, choosing a revenue model, and how to pitch investors.
- Mentorship, Coaching & One-on-One Meetings: Twelve weeks of individualized coaching and mentorship from the gener8tor team during bi-weekly, one-on-one meetings. One-on-one meetings with 100+ mentors including serial entrepreneurs, industry experts and investors.
- Exclusive Premiere Night: Exclusive Premiere Night reception during which participating companies have the opportunity to pitch to an audience of entrepreneurs, mentors, investors and community members.
