Grants of up to $35,000 to USA researchers and research teams affiliated with nonprofit and public entities, including IHEs, veterinary clinics and hospitals, and other institutions for projects to advance animal welfare. Funding is intended to support research that will further knowledge in responding to behavior problems in shelter populations and victims of animal cruelty. Applications from researchers from historically (and currently) under-resourced backgrounds and/or those who are in the early stages of their careers are strongly encouraged.

The 2021 Applied Behavior Research Seed Grant program solicits research proposals that will inform shelter behavior protocols and/or criminal casework. Of particular interest is research that addresses common behavior concerns in shelter populations that lead to euthanasia or research that provides behavioral evidence that informs key community stakeholders and allied professionals in preventing and responding to animal cruelty. Key stakeholders include, but are not limited to:  
  • Animal Welfare Organizations 
  • Veterinary Professionals 
  • Law Enforcement and Prosecutors 
In order to be responsive to this request, projects must have a clear research question with an appropriate methodology to address the proposed research aims.

The typical grant amount under this solicitation is $10,000-$15,000 with a maximum individual grant amount of $35,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

ASPCA acknowledges that the effort to effectively respond to behavior problems in shelter and cruelty populations can be advanced by multiple disciplines and diverse areas of expertise (e.g., ethology, biology, physiology, psychology, veterinary medicine). For the 2021 funding call, ASPCA is inviting applications from investigators whose projects will contribute to advancing these goals, rather than constraining the scope of applications to specific scientific areas. ASPCA invites investigators and organizations that meet the below criteria to apply for a research seed grant:

Investigators and/or research teams affiliated with US public and not-for-profit entities, such as universities, colleges, veterinary hospitals and clinics, and other institutions are eligible to apply.

Note: Applications from researchers from historically (and currently) under-resourced backgrounds and/or those who are in the early stages of their career are strongly encouraged.

Applicants must meet ASPCA Grantee Organizational Standards:
- Business registration must be current/active in the Grantee’s state of incorporation
- Charitable registration must be current/active in the state of the Grantee’s primary location (for grants =>$25,000)
- No delinquent ASPCA grant refunds, if applicable
For nonprofits:
- must have at least 4 board members
- the majority of the board must be independent
- neither the Board Chairperson nor the Board Treasurer may be compensated

NOTE: Organizations with overdue ASPCA grant reports are not eligible to apply.

Projects with the primary aim of providing services or building infrastructure will not be considered.
