Grant Description
Grants to USA, Canada, and International college and university students at accredited institutions for participation in a conference related to technology research. Funding is intended to allow full-time students studying computer science to attend the conference and related workshops. The USENIX Student Grant Program provides funds to cover registration fees and assist with travel and accommodation expenses, if applicable.

The 20th USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation (NSDI '23) will take place in Boston, MA, USA, on April 17–19, 2023. NSDI focuses on the design principles, implementation, and practical evaluation of networked and distributed systems. The goal is to bring together researchers from across the networking and systems community to foster a broad approach to addressing overlapping research challenges.

For Student Grants, preference is shown to:

  • Students whose areas of study significantly overlap with the conference topics and who write a concise essay (supporting statement) outlining their studies and research.
  • First-time applicants and those who have not received a grant in the past 12 months.
  • Students from institutions not traditionally represented at USENIX.
  • Financial need.
  • Degree level (undergraduate, graduate)
  • Students who are both presenting a paper at the event and do not have alternate sources of funding available to them.

Recipient

Additional Eligibility Criteria
Student grants are for current full-time students studying computer science.

Ineligible
Post-doc researchers and associates do not qualify for a student grant.

Please note that speakers and presenters at the conference are not guaranteed any travel assistance.

Please do not apply for a grant if you have other funds available to you, such as through your faculty advisor, or if you have received a grant through USENIX in the past year.

Pre-Application Information
The deadline to apply is Monday, March 13, 2023.

USENIX strives to send out notifications to student grant applicants approximately two weeks after the grant application deadline and before the conference's Early Bird deadline.

Do not register for the conference--even if you are an author or a presenter--until you are notified about your grant. If you receive a grant, you will be sent detailed registration instructions. Student Grant recipients will receive a code for complimentary registration; grant funds are intended to be used for travel and/or hotel expenses.

Applicants can be awarded only one grant each calendar year.

If you are applying for a grant and require a visa to attend the conference, submit your visa application as soon as possible. Visa applications for travel to USENIX conferences may require a letter from USENIX. To request an invitation letter, please email USENIX. Note that USENIX staff need a minimum of 48 hours to process these requests.

Please do not submit multiple grant applications to a single conference.
