Grants and in-kind support to USA early-career investigators for cancer research projects. Funding is intended to provide support to researchers who have not yet received major funding. Researchers will also receive guidance and access to resources through the funding source's professional development community. Special consideration will be given to understudied areas in pancreatic cancer research.

The organization’s grantmaking strategy recognizes the need to maintain a pipeline of researchers dedicated to studying pancreatic cancer and acknowledges an urgency to accelerate scientific and medical breakthroughs that benefit patients. Early career grants are awarded to attract researchers to the field of pancreatic cancer, and translational and clinical grants support research that is well positioned for next steps and has the potential to drive improvements in clinical practice and patient outcomes. 

Research projects may be in any discipline of basic, clinical, translational or epidemiological research, and fall within at least one of the categories of the Common Scientific Outline (Biology; Etiology; Prevention; Early Detection, Diagnosis, and Prognosis; Treatment; or Cancer Control, Survivorship, and Outcomes Research.

Amount: $250,000. A maximum of 10% may be used for indirect costs, which is part of the total grant amount.

In addition to receiving financial support for their research, grantees participate in PanCAN’s Community for Progress. A mentorship program connects grantees with leading scientists in the field.

Term of Contract:

Duration: Two years. The grant term begins July 1, 2022.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants work at an academic, medical or research institution within the United States; there are no citizenship requirements. Applicants must have a doctoral degree (including PhD, MD, DO, DC, ND, DDS, DVM, ScD, DNS, PharmD or equivalent) in the biomedical sciences or in a field applicable to health science research and may not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral degree. And, applicants must have completed their most recent doctoral degree within the past 11 years.

Applicants must hold a faculty position with the title of assistant professor, instructor, research assistant professor or equivalent. Associate professors are not eligible to apply. Applicants who are/were principal investigators on major grants are not eligible to apply. Employees or subcontractors of a U.S. government entity or for-profit private industry are not eligible.

Applicants must have independent laboratory space as confirmed by his/her institution in the Letter of Institutional Support.

Grant recipients are expected to attend the PanCAN Annual Scientific Summit. The meeting location and dates are to be determined.
