Grants of up to $7,000 to USA and Canada PhD students to conduct research studies related to behavioral health. Funding is intended to support dissertation preparation on topics that increase knowledge of the well-being of adults, children, families, and communities. Funded research projects will use interventions or preventive measures designed to alleviate behavioral, social, and psychological health problems.

Studies must focus on populations of the United States and/or Canada or comparative studies between United States and/or Canada populations and other countries.

Allowable expenses include:

  • Data collection and preparation
  • Data analysis (computer software, etc.)
  • Preparation of final dissertation copy
  • Administrative costs

Grants of up to $7,000 are available.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral program in the United States or Canada.

Applicants must provide evidence that the dissertation proposal has received official faculty approval, as well as official final approval from the IRB of the sponsoring institution; proposals with provisional approval will not be reviewed. The sponsoring organization must agree to accept administrative responsibility for the project and submit required financial forms and reports to the Fund.

Applicants must provide:
- A letter from sponsoring organization affirming tax-exempt status, relevant accreditation or certification.
- A letter from the applicant's primary faculty dissertation sponsor.

The following expenses are not allowed: Salary, fringe benefits, tuition, or living expenses for the applicant; major travel, hotel costs, or conference attendance; purchase of major equipment or furniture; and expenses incurred prior to dissertation award or completed dissertation.

Pre-Application Information:

The Fund observes two funding cycles annually. The deadlines are 5:00 PM Eastern Time April 1 and November 1. The application window for the spring 2021 cycle will be from March 1st through April 1st.

Sponsoring institutions and candidates will be notified of this final decision approximately 3 months after the application

If a grant is awarded, the check will be made payable to the applicant’s organization and sent to the attention and address of the university official designated in the application.
