Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants to USA researchers for studies related to the impact of changing economies for less-skilled workers. Applicants must submit an LOI prior to applying. Priority funding is intended for research on the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the workforce. The Foundation is interested in social science research examining economic, political, racial, ethnic, generational, and social inequalities relevant to public policy and social change. Grants can be used for research assistance, data acquisition, data analysis, and investigator time for conducting research and writing up results.

The Russell Sage Foundation’s program on the Future of Work supports innovative research on the causes and consequences of changes in the quality of jobs for less- and moderately skilled workers and their families. The Foundation seeks investigator-initiated research proposals that will broaden the understanding of the role of changes in employer practices, the nature of the labor market, and public policies on employment, earnings, and job quality. They are especially interested in proposals that address questions about the interplay of market and non-market forces in shaping the wellbeing of workers, today and in the future.

Examples of the kinds of topics and questions that are of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Causes and consequences of job polarization
  • Alternative Work Arrangements
  • The changing legal environment
  • Emerging technologies and the future of work
  • Workforce development and training
  • Changing economies, changing families, and policy responses

More information about interest areas can be found at the URL for Full Text below.

RSF has a strong interest in projects using computational social science, particularly how digital, large, and complex data and computational methods can further the understanding of the causes and consequences of changes in job quality, especially for low-wage workers.

The Foundation is particularly interested in analyses that make use of newly available data or demonstrate novel uses of existing data. They also support original data collection. Proposals to conduct field experiments, in-depth qualitative interviews, and ethnographies are also encouraged.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Trustee Grants are generally capped at $175,000, including 15% indirect costs, over a two-year period. Presidential Awards are capped at $35,000 (no indirect costs). PIs may request up to $50,000 (no indirect costs) when the proposed research project has special needs for gathering data (e.g.: qualitative research) or gaining access to restricted-use data.

Term of Contract:

Projects are limited to no more than two years.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

All applicants (both PIs and Co-PIs) must have a doctorate. In rare circumstances, RSF may consider applications from scholars who do not hold a doctorate but can demonstrate a strong career background that establishes their ability to conduct high-level, peer-reviewed scholarly research. Students may not be applicants.

RSF particularly encourages early-career scholars to apply for Presidential grants. All nationalities are eligible to apply and applicants do not have to reside in the U.S., but the focus of the proposed research project must be on the U.S. as per the Foundation's mission.

RSF does not provide funds for any of the following expenses:
- Rent or other payments for office space.
- Sabbaticals or fellowships at other institutions, even if the PI will be working on an RSF project.
- Tuition remission for graduate or undergraduate students.
- Personnel or other costs related to editing or communications or dissemination or publication, including journal publication fees.
- Travel for collaboration purposes (meetings among PIs/collaborators) or dissemination/presentation of findings (conference travel).
- The development of the data collection instrument and sample design as part of the proposed project.
- Generic costs, such as copying, printing, mailing, phone calls, office supplies, information/computer services, etc. These are typically considered to be a part of indirect costs.

RSF no longer considers submissions that make use of publicly available data, such as the Current Population Survey, American Community Survey, Panel Study of Income Dynamics, National Longitudinal survey of Youth, etc. However, if the project addresses a pressing issue or uses these data in an innovative way, RSF may consider such proposals as Presidential grants.
