George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation

Deadline Date:

11/01/21

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Fellowships of $35,000 to USA and territories early mid-career authors and scholars for independent projects in creative nonfiction and history. Fellowships are intended to provide time to complete independent works, and are frequently used to supplement sabbatical leave.

Sequence of Fields:

  • Creative Nonfiction

The Foundation will consider proposals from authors and scholars working in any genre, style, and media that can be classified as Creative Nonfiction. In accordance with the fellowship program's overall goal of supporting early mid-career artists and scholars, applicants should have a record of a major publication and demonstrate a promising program of creative development using Creative Nonfiction as a mode of creative expression and experimentation.

  • History

The Foundation will consider proposals from scholars examining and interpreting historical works from a critical point of view in any genre, place, language, time period, or format (manuscript, print, digital), including philological, historical, theoretical, and comparative perspectives. These fellowships do not support creative work (see upcoming fellowship opportunities in Fiction, Poetry, and Playwriting and in Creative Nonfiction), or scholarship primarily focused on Literature (see upcoming fellowship opportunity in Literary Studies). In accordance with the fellowship program's overall goal of supporting early mid-career artists and scholars, applicants should have a promising record of scholarly accomplishment that includes one major project.

Number of Grants:

A total of nine fellowships will be awarded in April 2021 for 2021-2022.

Estimated Size of Grant:

$35,000

Term of Contract:

Funds become available July 1st of the year of award and may be taken any time within four years of that day.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligibility:
- Early mid-career professional status. Appropriate candidates for a Howard Fellowship should have completed formal studies within the past five to fifteen years of the application date and should also have successfully completed at least one major project beyond degree requirements that would be sufficient for the awarding of tenure at a research institution or for achieving comparable peer recognition, e.g., through publication or exhibition. Candidates already nationally and internationally recognized leaders in their fields as reflected by their promotion to full professor or by comparable recognition in their fields of endeavor are not normally eligible for a Howard Fellowship.

- Fellowship support is particularly intended to augment paid sabbatical leaves. In the case of independent artists or scholars, or those without paid leaves, the Foundation would expect that a Howard Fellowship would enable them to devote a substantial block of time to the proposed project.

- Regardless of applicant's citizenship, must currently be living and working in the United States or U.S. Territories.

Note that fellowship funds are intended mainly to support time for creative work; they do not underwrite costs of equipment, exhibitions, publication, advertising, or promotional costs.

Pre-Application Information:

The Foundation will begin accepting applications on July 1, 2021 for the upcoming fellowships in Photography and Film Studies. The deadline is November 1. The fellowships funds will be awarded for use beginning 7/1/2022.
