Awards of $5,000 to USA individuals for encouraging diversity in the fields of science and engineering. In addition to a cash prize, the winners will designate an academic institution to receive grants of $10,000 to further the objectives of this award. The award is intended to recognize significant accomplishments by individuals in stimulating students, especially those currently underrepresented in the profession, to elect careers in the chemical sciences and engineering, and in generating a broader appreciation of chemistry as the central science.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The award consists of $5,000 and a certificate. A grant of $10,000 will be made to an academic institution, designated by the recipient, to strengthen its activities in meeting the objectives of the award. Up to $1,500 for travel expenses to the meeting at which the award will be presented will be reimbursed.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Nominees for the award may come from any professional setting: academia, industry, government, or other independent facility.

Nominators:
- Nominators are not required to be members of the Society.
- A nomination can only have one nominator and the recommendation letter is written by this person.
- Any individual, except a member of the award selection committee or an ACS Board member during their terms of service on the Board, may submit either one nomination or one support letter for each award. However, selection committee members may submit other nominations or support letters for awards in which they are not serving as a judge.

Nominees:
- Nominees are not required to be members of the Society.
- The nominee’s accomplishments should be specific to the purpose of the award.
- In general, a recipient of a widely recognized scientific award is not eligible for an ACS national award unless the accomplishment cited as the basis for the nomination represents new or different work.
- An individual who has received an ACS National Award may be nominated for a different ACS award if (1) the nomination is for clearly different work from the previous award (the letter of recommendation for the award must address the differences between the work performed for the previous ACS award and that which is addressed in the current nomination) or (2) at least five years has elapsed since the previous ACS award was received. The “five-year” rule is waived for the preceptor(s) of the students who are eligible to receive the Nobel Laureate Signature Award for Graduate Education in Chemistry.

Nominating a Team for an Individual Award: Nominations of more than one individual for a National Award not labeled as a team award is acceptable, but the sharing of the Award will be permitted only in exceptional cases and requires prior approval of the sponsor and of the ACS Board Committee on Grants and Awards (G&A). Please email this request to the Awards office before submitting the nomination.

Posthumous awards will be made only when knowledge of the individual's death is received after the recipient has been announced. Nominations of individuals known to be deceased will not be accepted.

The award will be granted regardless of race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, presence of disabilities, and educational background.

Pre-Application Information:

Procedure/Timeline:
- July 1 – November 1 each year is the open period for nominations. Completed nominations are submitted online.
- From January through June of the following year, the Award Selection Committees review all the nominations.
- The ACS President will contact all recipients to inform the nominees of their nomination. An official letter of congratulations will be mailed to each recipient.
- The recipients are announced in the Chemical and Engineering News (C&EN) during the week of the fall National Meeting.
- Each recipient is required to deliver an address on the scientific work that is being recognized by the Award during the spring National Meeting. The presentation will be given in a designated division or a division appropriate for the Award depending on the eligibility requirements of the Award. See ACS Technical Divisions for a complete listing of Technical Divisions.
- The Award will be presented to the recipient at the spring National Meeting during the National Awards Program Ceremony and General Meeting of the Society.

Rules & Guidelines:
- Nominations remain in the database for three award cycles. If the nominee is not named the recipient, the nominations will automatically rollover to the next award cycle. Nominators are encouraged to access the nomination during the award cycle nomination open period July 1-November 1 of each year to update the nomination.
- After the third award cycle, the nomination will expire. The year the award will be presented to the nominee is the award cycle year. For example, we are accepting nominations for the 2023 award cycle July 1 and the nomination deadline is November 1, 2021. The recipients of these awards will be presented the award in 2023.
- Some awards are presented biennially (even- or odd-year) or triennially and therefore skip a year. If a nomination is submitted for a biennial award given in the even numbered years, the nomination submitted will remain in the database for the 2023, 2025, and 2027 award cycles. Also, support letters remain in the database for the same three award cycles.
