State of the World’s Sea Turtles (SWOT)

Deadline Date:

10/29/21

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of $1,000 to USA, Canada, and International nonprofit and for-profit organizations, academic institutions, and individuals for conservation and research programs related to sea turtles. Funding is intended to strengthen networking and build research capacity and support activities in the focus areas of science, outreach, and education. Additional grants are available for projects relating to the conservation of two of the top global priorities for sea turtle conservation: Eastern Pacific leatherbacks, and Kemp’s ridleys throughout their range.

In addition, in honor of Marjorie Lee Kemp (1927-2021), this year SWOT will be awarding one additional education and outreach grant to a project led by an early-career (under 35 years old) female.

Program Areas:

  • Networking and Capacity Building
    • Strengthen networks that facilitate information-sharing and coordinate sea turtle conservation efforts.
    • Build local or regional capacity for sea turtle research and conservation.
  • Science: These grants aim to support scientific work that fills critical gaps in knowledge about sea turtles that will support conservation objectives. This includes:
    • Assessments of poorly known or recently discovered sea turtle populations (nesting or at sea).
    • Research that will help address a specific conservation issue or management objective.
  • Education and Outreach: These grants support public education and outreach efforts that seek to motivate changes in human behavior in places where sea turtles nest, migrate, and forage.
    • Projects that go beyond raising awareness among a "general public" and those that that address a particular behavior and measure impact (e.g., a campaign focused on plastic waste reduction that results in a measurable decline in plastic waste) will be favored.
